Around Day 13 to Day 14, the pituitary gland secretes Luteinising Hormone (LH).

The surge in LH causes ovulation, during which the mature ovum is released from the Graafian follicle into the fallopian tube.

After ovulation, the empty Graafian follicle develops into the corpus luteum.

The corpus luteum secretes progesterone.

Progesterone has several important functions:

  • It maintains the thickened endometrium.
  • It prepares the uterus for implantation of the fertilised egg.
  • It prevents the uterus from shedding its lining.
  • High levels of progesterone inhibit the secretion of FSH, preventing the development of additional follicles during the same menstrual cycle.

If Fertilisation Does Not Occur

If the ovum is not fertilised:

  • The corpus luteum degenerates.
  • Progesterone production decreases.
  • The inhibition of the pituitary gland is removed.
  • The pituitary gland begins secreting FSH again.
  • The thickened endometrium can no longer be maintained.
  • The lining of the uterus breaks down and is shed together with blood.
  • This process is called menstruation, marking the beginning of a new menstrual cycle.

The Role of the Placenta During Pregnancy

If fertilisation occurs, the embryo implants into the endometrium, and the placenta develops from the chorionic villi and the uterine lining.

Transfer of Antibodies

The placenta allows antibodies from the mother’s blood to pass to the foetus.

These antibodies provide the unborn baby with temporary immunity against certain diseases during pregnancy and shortly after birth.

Removal of Waste Products

Waste products such as carbon dioxide and urea diffuse from the foetal blood into the mother’s blood.

The mother’s kidneys and lungs then remove these waste products from her body.

Acts as a Protective Barrier

The placenta acts as a selective barrier, preventing many harmful substances and microorganisms from reaching the foetus.

Although it offers protection, some harmful substances such as alcohol, nicotine, certain drugs, and some viruses can still cross the placenta and affect foetal development.

Hormone Production

The placenta secretes progesterone during pregnancy.

Progesterone maintains the thickened endometrium, preventing menstruation and ensuring that pregnancy continues successfully.

As pregnancy progresses, the placenta becomes the main source of progesterone after the corpus luteum degenerates.
